Creation Stories
Life is a story of infinite size and grandeur and fabulously minute detail. From the vastness of the universe to the minuteness of the atom, a song, a dance, a game, a story is unfolding as we spiral through space and time.
Since the earliest days of our species we have told stories to each other to pass on information, explain our place in the scheme of things and to entertain.
All human cultures around the world and throughout time have created stories to explain how life, the universe and everything in it, came into existence. These are the creation stories of mankind and they are myriad in number and full of wonder.
The Creation Story of a culture is its starting point. From this point emerges the customs, values, sense of connection and identity that define those people. We could perhaps call it the seed of that culture. From the seed of the Creation Story comes the culture and sense of reality.
What is important to realise is that each tribe or small group of people had their own distinct Creation Story just as they did their own language. As populations grew and civilizations rose and fell stronger groups would conquer another group and discount their story and implant their own as a way to subsume them into their own culture.
So the ‘story’ emerges as a key component to culture, history and our sense of reality.
From the ‘connected’ or Live Earth standpoint it is also important to appreciate that of course the whole of life and nature is completely intelligent, it is simply non verbal. By shifting our focus from verbal to feeling we can acquire the ability to communicate with any aspect of nature. In this way we can step past the human misperception that the rest of life is unintelligent. If this is so, then it would seem that each plant, animal, bird, fish, creature, even rock and stone has its own story and storyline that they can tell and is part of the larger story. Interestingly in Native American culture the stones and the rocks are seen as being the record keepers that record what has happened in that place. This comes into an interesting focus when we remember that 60% of the Earth’s crust is made up of silica and that that silica is what we now use for the chips in computers for recording and processing information!
We have come full circle and it is no longer ‘either or’ it is ‘both and’!
In the past different cultures generated their own Creation Stories and Myths. These defined and served them. The only problem was that they also acted to separate them from the folks over the hill or across the water who had a different story. This of course still happens today.
What is happening now is that as the scientific story slowly emerges and is gathered by people from all over the world who more or less agree a new Creation Story is unfolding. One that belongs to everyone and that honours not only our species but all our fellow species and the rest of Nature as well. This story that we are gathering now and calling the Live Earth Story is the story that connects us all together with the whole of the planet, our galaxy and our universe.
